Why I’m Obsessed with the ‘Old & Ugly’

Mia looking in thrift shop for bargains
Thrift Shopping

Hi, I’m, Mia

If you’ve seen my videos, you know I spend a ridiculous amount of time in the back corners of Manchester’s charity shops. While most people are looking for high-street labels, I’m usually hunting for the stuff everyone else ignores: the 80s shoulder pads, the 70s floor-length curtains disguised as dresses, and the massive “Grandpa” sweaters that have seen better days.

Charity Shop

Why? Because there is zero soul in “new.”

I grew up here in Manchester, surrounded by the red bricks of the Northern Quarter and the creative chaos of Affleck’s Palace. I’ve always felt that clothes should tell a story—not just the one the brand wrote, but the one you write with a pair of fabric scissors and a sewing machine.

The “Thrift Flip” Philosophy

To me, a thrift store isn’t just a place to save a few quid (though, let’s be honest, an absolute bargain is a massive win). It’s a library of potential.

Every Monday and Thursday, I’ll be sharing a new transformation right here. We’ll be taking the “un-wearable” and turning it into something chic, modern, and—most importantly—sustainable.

What to Expect on This Blog:

  • The Hunt: The stories behind the finds (and the Manchester rain I braved to get them).

  • The “Scary” Cuts: The behind-the-scenes moments where I almost ruined a piece.

  • Style Tips: How to wear your flips so they look like designer boutique finds, not DIY projects.

I’m proper chuffed to have you along for the ride. Grab a brew, stay a while, and let’s see what we can save from the landfill this week.

Next up: I’m tackling a vintage leather trench. It’s heavy, it’s dated, and it’s going to be iconic.
